The Board of Trustees has drafted these policies in response to proposed changes to the Education Act, which place an emphasis on welcoming, caring, respectful and safe schools, and Bill 10. The related administrative practices, which help operationalize polices, are presently being developed and are expected to be available in early spring.
Bill 10 came into effect on June 1, 2015, and promotes equality and non-discrimination with respect to student organizations in schools, such as gay-straight alliances (GSAs). Bill 10 protects sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression in the Alberta Bill of Rights as protected grounds from discrimination.
The Board of Trustees has a responsibility to maintain safe, caring and respectful learning environments for its students and staff. The new draft policies and accompanying regulations are intended to protect the human rights of all.
Feedback on draft policies
Trustees and principals would appreciate receiving as much feedback/input as possible and, to this end, will be bringing this item forward at School Council meetings. Parents are asked to read the draft policies below and, if possible, attend their School Council meetings in January and February to provide feedback. (Contact the school for specific meeting dates.) Alternatively, parents may connect directly with their local Trustee or principal directly by phone or email. The deadline for all feedback is February 29, 2015.
School jurisdictions have been directed to submit all policies, regulations and practices related to welcoming, caring, respectful and safe learning environments to the Minister of Education by March 31, 2016.
