Dual Credit

Sturgeon Public Schools offers students the unique opportunity to earn both high school and post-secondary credits simultaneously through our Dual Credit program. By partnering with prestigious institutions like Olds College, Lakeland College, Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT), Northern Lakes College, Norquest College, and Athabasca University, we provide a range of courses designed to enrich our students' educational journey.

Students can participate in live online instruction or self-paced learning, guided by college professors and high school teachers. These courses not only give students a head start on their post-secondary education but also boost their confidence and motivation as they transition from high school. With the ability to explore potential career paths in a familiar environment, students can take risks and discover their interests with minimal pressure.

Enrolment is limited to two Dual Credit courses per year, allowing students to focus on achieving their academic goals while preparing for future success in post-secondary education. Sturgeon Public Schools remains committed to fostering high-quality learning environments through these partnerships, empowering students to excel academically and professionally.

Lakeland College Courses:

American Sign Language

Introduction to American Sign Language (ASL), culture, and the community of Deaf persons who use this language. Learn how to have basic conversations, as well as use appropriate behaviours with the Deaf culture.

Play (Child Development)

Play is a course in the ELCC and CYC programs at Lakeland College. Students explore the significance of play in the development of children.

Basic Energy Principles

A prerequisite course to all other courses in the Renewable Energy & Conservation certificate & diploma programs; this course provides students with an understanding of principles of energy systems including electricity, heat, energy movement and water flow.

Heavy Oil and Gas

This course will explain what heavy oil is and ways heavy oil is produced as well as explore the steps involved in getting heavy oil and natural gas out of the ground and into the marketplace.

Hair Styling

This course provides the student with an overview of the requirements of a safe working
environment in which to practice hairstyling.

Introduction to Aesthetics

Introduction to Esthetics provides the students an overview of safe practices in the workplace regarding bacteriology and sanitation. Course content includes formulating the professional image, practices and skills to work with the public.

Health, Nutrition and Safety

This is a required course in Early Learning & Child Care certificate and diploma programs at Lakeland College. This course examines the health, safety, and nutrition needs of young children. It includes practical applications for supporting these needs in an early childhood environment.

Northern Lakes College Courses:

Educational Assistant Courses

Taking Dual Credit Educational Assistant courses provides students with the opportunity to earn both high school and college credits, giving them a head start on their future career. Students can earn up to 60 high school credits and reduce their college workload by completing a portion of their Educational Assistant program in advance. Through a mix of online learning and practical experience, including required practicums, students get hands-on experience working in a classroom. This program allows students to explore whether a career as an Educational Assistant is right for them, and they may qualify for tuition bursaries and save on costs if their high school covers some expenses.

High School Credit: 3-5 depending on the course

Prerequisites: Successfully completed Math 10C or 10-3. 60% in English 10-1 or 70% in 10-2.

Power Engineering - 4th Class

The Dual Credit 4th Class Power Engineering program allows students to earn up to 25 high school credits and work towards a Power Engineering certificate from Northern Lakes College. Through online, self-paced learning, students explore whether a career in Power Engineering is right for them. The program includes opportunities for summer internships to gain real-world experience, improving their job prospects and earning potential. Students who complete the program meet the requirements for certification exams and further hands-on training. Students are eligible for a $500 tuition bursary if they continue with Northern Lakes College.

High School Credit: 5 credits per class

Prerequisites: Math 10C and completed or co-enrolled in English 20-2

Introduction to Surveying

The Dual Credit Introduction to Surveying program offers students the chance to earn up to 25 high school credits while exploring a career in surveying. The program combines flexible online learning with hands-on field experience through a one-week practical Survey Field Training. Students gain valuable skills in high-tech equipment operation and surveying techniques, helping them decide if this career path is right for them before graduating high school. Completing the program boosts job prospects in the survey industry and can lead to further educational opportunities. Students who continue their education with Northern Lakes College can qualify for a $500 tuition bursary.

ACT 1011 Accounting Principles

Students will gain an introduction to financial accounting focusing on the accounting cycle and the preparation of financial statements. Topics include accounting for merchandising activities, internal control, accounting for cash, temporary investments, accounts receivable, inventories, cost of goods sold, and current liabilities.

ACT 1012 Accounting Principles

Prerequisites: ACT 1011

This course is a continuation of ACT 1011 to allow for additional study of accounting at an
introductory level. Topics include capital assets, long-term liabilities, partnership accounting, accounting for corporations, financial analysis techniques, as well as the cash flow statement using various technologies.

MKG 1021 Marketing Principles

Students will develop an understanding of marketing concepts, principles and practices. Topics examined include the influence of environment factors on the marketing process, marketing strategy development, marketing mix formulation and adjustment for pricing,
promoting and distributing appropriate products and services to selected markets.

SPM 1020 Training for Performance

Students will learn about various aspects of training for performance. They will
analyze the basic science behind activity, energy systems, and macro-cycles in sport training. Consideration will also be given to diverse populations, training facilities, equipment, schedules, budgets, as well as individual and team training preferences.

SPM 1260 Introduction to Sports Management

Students will analyze various management models and organizational structures within the sport and recreation industry. Content areas include professional, amateur, Olympic, and intercollegiate sports.

 

Veterinary Technology Diploma Courses:

AHT 1050 Intro to Veterinary Profession

Students will become familiar with selected animal health organizations and will adhere to the regulations of veterinary medicine in Alberta. Students are introduced to strategies and
techniques for managing self and interacting with others. Students will examine animal welfare and ethical issues. This course provides students with foundational veterinary
medical terminology they will use throughout their career.

AHT 1140 Veterinary Practice: The Team Connection

Students will become familiar with the aspects of the service cycle within a
veterinary clinic. Students will explore veterinary software and their specific application to operating a veterinary practice. They will apply communication skills to create positive
experiences for veterinary clients.

Precision Agriculture Techgronomy Diploma Courses:

ATG 1007 Agriculture Electronics and Control Systems

Students will investigate foundations of control systems, electronics and practical applications in precision farming. Through experiential learning, students will identify and
troubleshoot components within hardware and devices, demonstrate uses/applications of
geospatial technology, test control systems and their role in product application, evaluate hardware and software, program farm equipment, and demonstrate a proven process for identifying/troubleshooting components in Agricultural Technology equipment and interpret digital diagnostic data.

ATG 1008 Solving Technology Problems

Students will engage in the problem-solving process using current hardware and software tools for applied data-driven problem solving. Through data analysis, algorithmic problem solving, and technical memo writing students will work to solve a technical agricultural issue.

EVS 1210 Applied Ecology

This course provides an introduction to ecological principles at the species, population, community and ecosystem levels. Specific application of ecology to sustainability and the
management of forest and grassland ecosystems are studied.

Hospitality and Tourism Management Diploma Courses:

HAT 1255 Global and Sustainable Tourism

Students will gain an understanding of the psychology of travel, tourism sectors, the role of key industry players, and contemporary issues in ecotourism, sustainability and business operations of various facilities, with a focus on the analysis of the service and operations from a guest perspective.

Horticulturist Technologist Diploma Courses:

HRT 1500 Managing Landscapes

Students gain experience in managing landscape sites through acquisition and
implementation of design principles, cultural practices of plant material, and advancing the sustainability of landscape environments to industry standards.

HRT 1700 Producing Horticulture Crops

Learners research and assess food and ornamental field crop production
markets, locations, materials, and processes to achieve a sustainable enterprise.

Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) Courses:

Advanced Welding Technology

Earn 3 CTS Credits upon successful completion of the WELD 1000 DC Workplace Safety and Tools Course. This comprehensive 10 week course covers the following topics:

  • WDA3900: Apprenticeship Safety
  • WDA3401: Tools & Equipment
  • WDA3403: Oxyfuel & Plasma Arc
